Tasting Notes: Secateurs Chenin Blanc has a light beeswax and honeysuckle-scented bouquet that opens gradually with aeration. The palate is balanced but simple, with light crisp orange rind and mandarin notes, a dash of lemongrass towards the finish, although it just cuts away a little swiftly. Brightly defined, with delicious quince, persimmon and green almond notes forming a core that is threaded with quinine and white ginger details. A light touch of toast on the finish lets the fruit and minerality play out.
Food Pairing: Chicken, Salad
Most of the Secateurs Chenin vines were planted the 1960s and tend to yield around 4 tons/hectare. The first Secateurs Chenin Blanc bottled under the Badenhorst Family Wines range was in 2009 and marked the start of a continuing affair with this most wonderful grape. The wine spends some time on its lees in concrete tanks and this important part of the maturation of the wine shows in the incredible texture and palate weight of this wine.
The aromas are flinty with peaches, honey, orange blossom and white stone fruit notes. A small proportion of the wine is fermented in oak adding to the silky texture of this wines.
“After an adventure in Abruzzo, winemaker Adi now makes Secateurs with a little bit of skin contact. Broad and tangy. Just the job for a party white. Crunchy with masses of personality. Lightly and attractively bitter on the end. Very Good Value.”
